Continuing Education for Teachers

Current Educators

In the state of California, the process for continuing education and receiving additional certification is very similar to that of those starting out in the field, and somewhat easier. Fortunately, current educators have often already fulfilled many of the requirements, and only need to receive additional educational training and certification from programs that can be found at California Teaching.

So, for example, a teacher who maybe wants to move into a counseling position or into administration has already fulfilled the teaching experience portion of the certification process. That teacher will only need to get extra education, often a Master's degree, and apply for the new certificate.

Here at California Teaching, we hope to make the process even easier by providing you with as many continuing education options as possible.

Career Opportunities

When continuing your education and professional training in the education field, there is a wide range of choices you can make that can make your classroom more effective, or take you out of the classroom into other areas. Because of this it is important to understand what career opportunities and what is required before you begin the process. Once you make that decision, though, make sure to use the tools here at California Teaching to find the right program for what career path you would like to take.

Here are some career paths you can take after continuing your education:

  • Continue teaching
While many of the education career paths you can take will take you out of the classroom, a continued education can be used to make you a more effective educator. By getting a Master's degree in education, you can gain a better understanding of the learning process and better understand how to reach children. On a high school level, where subject specialization is required, getting a Master's degree in your area can give you a greater depth of knowledge that translates well toward educating students. By continuing your education, you can transform your classroom into an effective learning environment that can better prepare children and teenagers for life after school. If you are looking to teach a different subject, it is important to realize that you will have to get certified in your new subject as well.
  • Administration »
In order to move into an administration position such as a vice principal, principal or superintendent, a Master's degree is almost always required. However, when moving into an administration position, it may also be beneficial to get an Ed.D. or Ph.D., often in educational administration or similar program. Leadership positions can be a very rewarding experience as you interact not only with the students, but also with the teachers in the school(s) as well. This is a chance for you to inspire teachers to not only be more effective educators, but to also enjoy teaching as well. When looking into a career in administration, it is important to know what the certification requirements are in California as well.
  • Counseling »
Another rewarding career path that would take you out of the classroom is school counseling. When moving into a counseling career, it is important to understand that there is much more to it than just helping students get their classes set up and helping them prepare for graduation and college. So much so that there are specific degrees and programs dedicated to school counseling.
